There are days I’m really lucky to have good friends. One of them talked me down from a tree today – gently nudged me off the righteous soap box and was a voice of calm rationality in the midst of my fire and brimstone. Without this person, this blog post would have been A LOT different. Thank you.
I have said that Fallon Shadowblade is my hero, and she always will be, but if you were to ask me the question, “Who do you want to be when you grow up?” I would say Han Solo. Then, after many of you rolled your eyes, I would say The Friendly Necromancer. (Yes, this is weird, seeing as how he’s a few days younger than I am.)
Friendly, as you probably know, is the caretaker of the blog that launched a thousand blogs, including my own. His simple, self-titled blog is written with a warm wisdom and quirky sense of humor that belies just how smart it really is. It’s impossible to read his blog without feeling his love for Wizard101 and the community. Without even trying, he inspired dozens, if not hundreds of us to dip our own quills into virtual ink. Too often I find myself reading something on Tom’s site and thinking, “I wish I had written that.” Ye Olde Friendly Necromancer’s writing speaks to all of us as wizards, as gamers, and as people.
He’s also a very large part of the success of Ravenwood Radio. As a self-proclaimed, ‘Early Adopter’, Friendly was one of our first guests. He has written our show’s intro theme almost since the beginning, and frequently contributes an audio segment that is easily one of the most eagerly anticipated parts of the show. I’m pretty proud of our little podcast, but I fully realize that Tom’s constant support is one of the reasons why we have succeeded.
In game, Tom has time for everyone, and even when his schedule is full, he has a friendly (see what I did there?) word for anyone. He’s never too busy not to say hi and trade a few kind words. I’m not exaggerating when I say that if we all had a bit more Friendly (I did it again!) in our community, it’d be a place no one would ever want to leave.
So why am I gushing about Thomas Lionblood today? It’s because he’s awesome. Tom is one of my favorite people in the Spiral, and I’m incredibly blessed to count him and his friendly family among my friends. And if I don’t miss my guess, you probably feel exactly the same way. So thanks, Friendly. Thanks for inspiring all of us to make this an assembly of bloggers, gamers and podcasters working together to create a harmonious community built around Wizard101.
And if you don’t recognize what a vital, treasured pillar of this community Señor Lionblood truly is, then you just might be a shortsighted troll, and I’ve got no time for shortsighted trolls.
(Edit: I want to make it clear that I am not singling out any particular person or entity with this statement. I apologize for any misunderstandings that may have occurred.)
See y’all in class.
