E-mail Blues

We’re currently having some trouble with our e-mail account podcast@ravenwoodradio.com. I’m not exactly sure what’s causing the problem, but our e-mail provider assures me correcting the issue is a “top priority”. Whatever that means. :(

Until it’s up, hitting us with a message on our Twitter feed is your best bet. Hopefully this will be corrected as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

See y’all in class.

Think About The Future!

Greetings fellow wizards! IT…IS…DONE!

/dance

Finally, after months of work (which is to say months of me being kind of a slacker), the site is up. We’re pretty happy with it so far, but it isn’t completely done. I wanted to take a moment to give you an idea of what you could expect to see here in the months to come:

Spiritcallings: In a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Warning! This post has little to do with Wizard 101. In fact, I’m going to spend most of the time talking about another game. So if that’s not your bag, thanks for stopping by and Happy New Year!

I’ll fess up to it: I’ve been an infrequent visitor of the Spiral this past week. In truth, I’ve been absent from Azeroth, Skyrim, and Reach as well (those colonists weren’t gonna make it anyway). Ever since December 20, 99.9% of my gaming time has been spent somewhere a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

Spiritcallings: Would Raiding Work?

More than once I’ve talked about how I’d like to see Raiding added to Wizard 101. If your MMO diet consists strictly of Wiz 101, you might need a little explanation.

Raiding refers to content reserved for large groups of players (in most games featuring raid content the group size is between 10 and 40 players) who square off against the ultimate bosses in the game. These players are nearly always at the current level cap and equipped with very high end gear, and they need it. Raid bosses usually have about 200 – 250 times the amount of health an average wizard would have. As an example, consider my mage in World of Warcraft. He’s got about 115,000 health; the raid boss we dropped last night had over 27 million.

Spiritcallings: GDC – Modest Expectations

Believe it or not, I have three blog posts simmering right now, but this one covers a topic that I think needs to be addressed. It’s another one of those “difficult” posts; I think it will contain some disappointing facts for many members of the community.

Since my return from GDC Online 2011 and my subsequent blog post and podcast discussion of my experiences there, I’ve heard a lot of community members sketching out plans to attend in 2012. On one hand, I’m really excited that my amateur YouTube clips, brief blog post, and discussion on Ravenwood Radio have stirred people to want to share that experience, but I feel I haven’t done a complete job of presenting all sides of the event.

Spiritcallings: The GDC Online Experience

I’ve had a few days to decompress following my quest to GDC Online 2011 in Austin. I already miss it and just can’t wait for next year. Representing Ravenwood Radio as a “member of the media” (it’s still difficult to say that and not snicker a little) at such a prominent industry event was an experience I’ll never forget. As much for myself as for anyone who happens across this post, I’d like to run down some of the major experiences, discoveries and lessons learned during the journey and GDC itself.

Spiritcallings: Future Past

One of the stories I wanted to tell when I first started this blog was how I started playing Wizard 101 and how Ravenwood Radio came to be. It’s a story I may have told once or twice before, but I need to punctuate it a little differently.

Spiritcallings: The Gambler

I want to start off with a dictionary definition. This isn’t a foreign word to anyone; it’s one we all know and have probably used in conversation, but I think it helps to drive home a point.

Gambling: to stake or risk money, or anything of value, on the outcome of something involving chance

We woke up this morning to new content. Those of us who must spend the day at work or school gnash our teeth as Wysteria sits waiting for us to conquer. The fact that this will be a fun expansion is unimpeachable; I really can’t wait to get home. Those pigs are going down.

However, there’s one new item in the crown shop that has me a little troubled: the Wyvern’s Hoard Pack.

Spiritcallings: Hackers

It can happen to you.

I don’t mean to write this to scare, although it may have that effect. I’m also aware this is a topic that has been BEATEN TO DEATH; most of you are probably tired of hearing this particular piece of advice and I don’t blame you.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t absolutely imperative. It’s a very simple method of protection we should all practice, and I’m here to tell you exactly why.

Spiritcallings: The Pitch

I was listening to Ravenwood Radio episode 44 this morning and came to a chat room question I wanted to revisit. Angel Winterbreeze piped up and asked:

What do you suggest is the best way to lure someone into playing Wizard 101?

Fallon and I offered a kind of basic outline: show your mark the game, let them watch you play it for 20 minutes or so, and then throw them into their own character. Walk them through the entire character generation experience and then run them through the first few quests in Unicorn Way. This is a good strategy, but for some gamers you might have to develop a more sophisticated approach if you’re going to get them to take the quiz. If you’ve got a gamer who is going in with the misconception that Wizard 101 is strictly a kid’s game and there’s no way it could hold anything of interest for them, you’re gonna need a pitch.
